While Brussels is the capital of Belguim, and a gigantic mega-city at that, Antwerp is a real gem where we spend our summers with the kids. And it offers many attractions for families. While, naturally, its Main Street is the town's centre, with its many stores and boutiques, it is downtown Antwerp I really recommend exploring. There, the small alleys and back ways are a trip you do not want to miss.
The abundance of restaurants is one thing that makes this city stand out. You can find anything your heart desires, from great asian food, to Italian, Greek, Japanese and of course American food. I recommend especially Rome, an Italian eatery in the business section of town, right by the train station, for upscale yet reasonably priced Italian food.
For Mexican food, we went to La Taqueria on Vrijheidstraat 63, 2000. It's a simple joint, but the food is to die for. They offer everything from speciality tacos to signature cocktails and it is a great hands-on experience since you only eat with your hands there. So go check it out!
For Brazillian food, we went to Restaurant Tropicos on Van Cuyckstraat 2, 2000 and absolutely adored their beef, darkened chicken and side dishes. I especially recommend their frozen passion fruit margarita.
For Indian food, we went to Taj Mahal, located next to the train station. It's a speciality eatery with authentic Indian food that you should go for.
Bike rides are another source of joy in Antwerp, since the city is relatively small, it's really easy to get around on bicycles as there are also many bike trails all over town.
A great experience for the kids is located a twenty minutes drive outside of town and it's a natural water park called Aqua-park. The are floaters located in a lake and the kids literally bounce off them and slide into the cool lake water. It is a really unique treat. In addition, they have (for an extra cost) go kart cars and bouncing castles in the sand. There is also a little sandy beach attached to the lake which is a lot of fun on hot summer days.
Antwerp is a really low-key chilled town, but one of its main appeals to me is how close we live to its central train station, where you could hop on a train that will take you anywhere in Europe, that's how we roll in Antwerp in the summer. So hop on board and plan to join us this summer.
